Important Note on Taxonomy: The name Lactobacillus sporogenes is an older, outdated term. The bacterium was reclassified and is now correctly known as Bacillus coagulans. It is a unique probiotic because it has the lactic-acid producing benefits of Lactobacillus but forms tough endospores like Bacillus. You will find it sold under both names, but Bacillus coagulans is the scientifically accurate term.

The key identifier is the presence of endospores. The spores are oval, refractive (shiny), and located terminally or sub-terminally within the swollen sporangium (the mother cell), giving it a characteristic "drumstick" or "tennis racket" appearance.
It is Gram-positive (stains purple).
